Mr. Henry T. McKinley, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 29, 2014 while at home.He was 73 years of age.
Henry was born on March 3, 1941, one of four children of the late Thomas and Mary Ann (O'Reilly) McKinley.He was raised in Ireland, and came to the United States in March of 1959.He lived in Beacon Hill until settling in Melrose in 1976.
Henry worked as a painter at the John Hancock Tower in Boston.He worked his way up through the property maintenance division until he held the position of head foreman.With a tireless work ethic, he often worked 6 days a week, never turning down an overtime shift and finally retired after over 40 years in 2001.
Henry was a loving grandfather to his 5 grandchildren, and enjoyed getting together for holidays, recitals, and games.He was quiet, yet had a reliable set of jokes that he would often tell. He was a very kind person who was always generous with his time.During his time at home, Henry enjoyed watching movies, and loved cheering on the Boston sports teams.
Mr. McKinley found great peace and joy in the natural comforts of the sandy New England beaches.Many times he spent summer days at Hampton Beach and more recently at Salisbury Beach where he could relax and people watch.He also enjoyed walking around Melrose, and was known for his sweet tooth. In the last several years, Henry was a parishioner at St. Patrick Church in Stoneham.
Henry was the beloved father of Jo-Anne Boulay and her husband Mark of Plymouth, Thomas P. McKinley and his wife Kerry Lear of Derry, NH, Robert F. McKinley of E. Boston, and Mary T. Hyland and her husband Andrew of Dublin, Ireland.Dear brother of the late Kathleen, George, and Robert McKinley. Cherished grandfather of Katherine, Scott, Jacob, Benjamin, and Lilly. Also survived by 2 nephews, many cousins, and many lifelong friends in Ireland.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Henry's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose during visiting hours on Thursday, April 3 from 4-8 PM, and again on Friday morning at 8AM before leaving in procession to St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham for his Funeral Mass celebrated at 9AM. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
