Mr. Howard H. Smith, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, December 26, 2009 following a period of declining health.He as 91 years old.Mr. Smith was born in Mineola, New York on September 23, 1918, a son of the late Charles R. Smith and Katherine (Hyer) Smith.
He was raised in Somerville, New Jersey and graduated with a degree in design from the Cooper Union School in New York City.During World War II, he proudly served his country for four years in the US Army.Following his time in the service, Mr. Smith continued his education at Columbia University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences degree. He began his career in commercial architecture with the firm, Valtz & Kimberly in Melrose, continued at Smith & Burne in Malden and finally established his own firm, Howard Heuer Smith Associates.Over the course of his career, Mr. Smith acted as the designer for numerous projects involving schools, banks, hospitals and churches in the Boston area.He worked regularly with local Banks to design and construct ATMs and helped design the former North Reading Police and Fire Stations.
Howard was the loving husband of Becky (Green) Smith with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.Dear father of Jay B. Smith and his wife Jean of Winchester.Dear brother of the late Randolph Smith.Cherished grandfather of Emily J. Smith and Rachael A. Smith both of Winchester.
Funeral Service at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., MELROSE, Wednesday, December 30 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours Tuesday 4 - 6 PM.Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville, Maine.
