Mr. Hugh M. Parks, a longtime resident of Stoneham, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Wilmington Health Care Center, at age 96.
Born on March 1, 1918 in Ellijay, Georgia, Hugh was one of eight children of the late George M. and Josie (DeBorde) Parks.He was raised and educated in Ellijay, GA and after graduating from high school entered the Citizen Conservation Corps work program sponsored by President Roosevelt.Hugh then served his country proudly during World War II in the United States Navy.He was stationed aboard a destroyer, the USS Prairie, and was honorably discharged after five years of dedicated service on October 19, 1945.On September 29, 1944 he married Rosamond Smith and they moved to Stoneham to raise a family.
Mr. Parks enjoyed his working career as a Master Electrician employed by Raytheon in Waltham for 32 years.After retiring from Raytheon, Hugh worked at New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham for 10 years. A true southern gentleman, Hugh was always ready to offer a hand to a neighbor, or a friend or family member.He was happiest when he had a tool in his hand and was able to use his skills to complete the job.In the 1950's, he built his own home in Stoneham, and on the weekends stayed busy doing jobs around the house.
Hugh was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Malden, and more recently Melrose Highlands Congregational Church.He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and was a 50-year member of the King Cyrus and Good Samaritan Lodges AF&AM in Stoneham and Reading.He served on the Board of Directors at the Heritage Apartments in Malden for 36 years and was a longtime member of the Brookline Bird Club. During his spare time, he and Rosamond enjoyed many birding trips to different locations throughout the United States.During the summer months, he enjoyed visiting the family cottage on Tenants Harbor, Maine where he could relax and enjoy the ocean air.
Above all else, Hugh was a dedicated and loyal husband, father and grandfather.A kind man to everyone he met, he never had a bad word to say about anyone and loved spending time with his family.He loved caring for his grandchildren and they cherished the time they spent with him.His handmade gifts to his grandchildren, wooden stilts and "marble shoots" will be forever cherished and enjoyed for years to come.Hugh will be remembered by all for his kindness, loyalty and love for his family.
Hugh was the beloved husband of Rosamond K. (Smith) Parks with whom he shared nearly 70 years of marriage. Devoted father of Hugh M. Parks, Jr. and his wife Eileen of Windham, NH, Alan B. Parks and his partner Joe McKay of Mt. Desert, ME, Jeffrey D. Parks and his wife Lauren of Malden, and Nancy E. Nee and her husband Michael of Plymouth.Dear brother of Hazel Collins of Scriven, GA and predeceased by six siblings. Cherished grandfather of Shannon Tomo and her husband Matthew of Red Bank, NJ, Jill McLaughlin and her husband Tim of Robbinsville, NJ, Justin Nee and his wife Laura of Needham, and Lindsey Travers and her husband Brian of Abington. Loving great-grandfather of Mackayla McLaughlin, Lucky Tomo, Daulton McLaughlin, and Camden Travers. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Hugh's life at the Melrose Highland Congregational Church, 355 Franklin St., Melrose where his Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday, August 2 at 11AM. Interment in Seaside Cemetery, Tenants Harbor, Maine.
