James H. Chetwynd

Mr. James H. Chetwynd, Sr., a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away suddenly on Wednesday morning, November 7, 2012, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, at the age of 90.

He was born in Melrose on August 27, 1922, one of 9 children of the late Effie (Nickerson) Chetwynd and Frederick Chetwynd.Raised in Melrose, James graduated from Melrose High School and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Chetwynd worked as a letter carrier for over 20 years for the United States Postal Service in Melrose and Malden.He was also the owner of Chet's TV, a local television repair business.As a professional repairman, James serviced hundreds of TVs in Melrose and the surrounding communities beginning in the 1950's until his retirement at age 75.He worked out of his basement, proudly fixing tubes, circuits, and resistors for his many customers.

An artistically talented man, James interests included painting and working with metal.He was a member of the Reading Art Association, and enjoyed attending workshops at the Waltham Metal Werx.He painted many beautiful family portraits and even had his portrait of President John F. Kennedy hung in the Massachusetts State House.His other interest was in metal fabrication and he enjoyed many hours working on the large metal milling machines he had in his basement.He was also a licensed Ham Radio Operator and loved gardening.

He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia M. (Smith) Chetwynd with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.Cherished father of Gail M. Enos and her husband, Leonard of Provincetown, and James H. Chetwynd, Jr. and his wife Susan of Stoneham.Dear brother of Mildred E. Keohan of Salem, NH, and the late Kenneth, Frederick, George, Harold, Evelyn Martino, Ruby Wilson, and Myrtle Wile. Loving grandfather of Leonard E. Enos III of Harwich, John Chetwynd of Stoneham, and Amanda Chetwynd of Stoneham.Devoted great-grandfather of Tatiana Michelle Enos.James is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will honor and remember his life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, November 12 from 4-7 PM, and again on Tuesday morning where his Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.Interment with military honors presented by the US Air Force in Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham.Gifts in his memory may be made to the Carrie A. Seaman Animal Shelter, PO Box 1374, Provincetown, MA 02657.
