James P. Dowd, a resident of Stoneham, and formerly of Woburn, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, at age 71.
Born in Somerville on August 16, 1945, Jim was the youngest of three sons of the late John J. and Frances M. (Carey) Dowd. He was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School.After high school he was employed by the MBTA as a bus operator for 30 years.He married his sweetheart, Jane E. (Hayes) Dowd in 1969.
Jim was an easy going, down to earth, family guy with simple needs. He loved playing golf, going bowling, or getting together with his buddies for a game of cards. He enjoyed catching a Red Sox or Patriots game, or taking a day trip to the casinos for a round of poker or blackjack. In his younger years, he enjoyed doing the cooking for the family or working in the vegetable garden with Jane's mom, Gladys.
Jim, also known as Pop Pop, was a loving, supportive grandfather who doted on his three grandchildren. He always brought a surprise chocolate bar, and enjoyed entertaining them with one of his well-known card tricks. He enjoyed having the kids for sleepovers and going to hockey games, dance recitals and baseball games as well as spoiling them at Christmas. Jim will be missed but always lovingly remembered as a loyal and devoted family man.
Jim was the beloved husband of Jane E. (Hayes) Dowd with whom he shared 48 years of marriage. Devoted father of Michael J. Dowd and his wife Julie of Chelmsford, and the late John Joseph Dowd. Cherished grandfather of Aidan, Abigail, and Liam Dowd.Dear brother of the late Bernard L. Dowd and his surviving wife Lois of Arlington, and the late John J. Dowd and his late wife Patricia. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor of Jim's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, April 23 from 2-6pm, and again on Monday morning at 9am before leaving in procession to Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield for his Funeral Mass celebrated at 10am.
