Mr. James H. "Jim" McBain, Sr., of Lynnfield and formerly of Melrose, passed away surrounded by loving family on February 25, 2012 at Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield, at the age of 91.
Mr. McBain was born on July 4th, 1920 in Concord, NH, one of four children of the late George T. and Louise (Fiske) McBain.He was raised and educated in Concord, NH where he graduated from high school.In 1942, he served his country by enlisting in the US Army and that same year, married his late wife Virginia Keniston.He and Ginny raised their family of 5 children in Melrose, lived in Lynnfield for 20 years, and more recently at Brooksby Village in Peabody.
Jim worked at Benson Goss Fuels for 35 years, retiring as office manager.Always active in his community, Jim was a member of the Lions Club, Fidelity Lodge AF&AM, Aleppo Temple Shrine, American Legion Post #137, and was a Director of the Melrose Cooperative Bank for 20 years.During his spare time, Jim loved gardening, woodworking and spending the summer months in Lovell, Maine.
Jim was the beloved husband of the late Virginia B. "Ginny" (Keniston) McBain with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.Devoted father of James H. McBain, Jr. and his wife Jean of Wakefield, Candace R. Whittaker and her husband Ryan of Ossipee, NH, Sherry C. Iwamoto and her husband Kay of Middleton, Steven K. McBain and his wife Pat of Swampscott, and Philip D. McBain and his wife Marycarol of Westwood.Dear brother of the late Fred M. McBain, Eleanor "Tish" Smith, and Lloyd McBain. Cherished grandfather of Joseph R. McBain, Jay D. McBain, Dawn N. Whittaker, Corey A. McBain, Ryan K. McBain, and loving great-grandfather of Olivia McBain.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Jim's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, March 1 from 4-8 PM, and again on Friday morning at the Chapel at Brooksby Village, 300 Brooksby Village Dr., Peabody where his Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.Gifts in his memory may be made to the Shriners Burns Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114, or the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970 or to a charity of your choice.
