Mrs. Jean L. (Babson) Allen, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away on Friday morning December 26, 2008 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading.She was 83 years of age.

Mrs. Allen was born August 28, 1925, in Newark, NJ, a daughter of the late Thomas E. Babson and Catherine E. (Caithness) Babson.

Jean was raised in West Orange, New Jersey where she graduated from High School and began her education to become a School Teacher.She attended Trenton State Teachers College for 2 years and graduated from Bouve College at Tufts University.She taught in Minneapolis, MN for 2 years and Newton, MA for 2 years before settling in Melrose as a Physical Education teacher.She retired in 1984 after nearly 40 years as a teacher.

Mrs. Allen was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Women's Republican Club, and the Melrose Symphony Orchestra where she played 1st Oboe.Jean was an accomplished artist and was a member of the Newburyport and Reading Art Associations.Mrs. Allen was involved with the Melrose Senior Chorus and was a trustee of the Babson Historical Association.She was inducted into the Melrose High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was a member of the Kappa Delta Psi.She loved playing bridge and will be remembered by her family as a loving mother and grandmother.

Jean was the beloved wife of Malcolm H. "Mal" Allen, Jr. with whom she shared 55 years of marriage.Loving mother of Laurie C. Durney and her husband Thomas of Melrose, Thomas B. Allen and his wife Jo of Stow, and Charlie M. Allen and his wife Ann of Haverhill.Dear sister of Marcia Meyer of Eugene, OR, Nancy Babson and Louise Knight both of Topsfield.Cherished grandmother of James and Patrick Durney, Nicole, Michael, Charlie M. Jr., Brittany A. and her fianc?, Ryan Surrette, and Brendan L. Allen.
