Mrs. Jean F. (Clish) Butt of Melrose died Thursday afternoon, October 26, 2006 in the Kindred Hospital, Peabody, MA
Mrs. Butt was born November 3, 1927 in Portland, ME, daughter of the late Thomas F. Clish and Velma Maxine (White) Clish.
Mrs. Butt graduated from Falmouth High School in 1945 in Falmouth, ME.She received a Masters degree in the Humanities from the University of Chicago in 1958 and a Masters degree in Library Science from Simmons College in Boston, MA in the early 1960's.She served in the Red Cross in Korea for 1 year in the late 1950's and worked as an administrative assistant for the Cambridge YWCA in the early 1960's.She was employed for 18 years at the Wessell Library as a reference librarian at Tufts University from 1965 - 1983.Working as a department head, she was responsible for U.S. documents, special collections, rare books, child study, and putting on exhibits.She had a number of librarians reporting to her and evaluated their work yearly. In Chicago, Jean took music lessons from Rudolph Ganz, an internationally known musician. She also taught the accordion and piano for a music school in Chicago where she received great joy teaching music to the children.
Jean was the beloved wife of 35 years to Clifton "Allyn" Butt.Loving mother of Samuel A. "Sam" Butt of Melrose.Devoted sister of Edith Ames of Lewiston, ME, Loie Rehbein of St. Louis, MO, and the late Thomas Clish. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, MELROSE Tuesday October 31 at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours Monday 4-8 PM.
Interment in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland, ME.
