Jean Wilkinson George, of East Sandwich and formerly of Melrose, passed away Wednesday morning, July 28, 2010, at Oosterman's Rest Home in Melrose surrounded by her family.She was 91 years old.
Jean was born on March 25, 1919, in Somerville, one of two children ofLt. William D. Wilkinson, U.S.N., and Hilda C. (Roos) Wilkinson. She was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1936.She continued her education at Radcliffe College, graduating in 1940 as President of her class.In her younger years, Jean taught French to Melrose Middle and High School students and developed an after school French program.A dedicated Melrose community volunteer, she served as a Girl Scout Leader, Sunday school teacher for the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, president of Phi Theta Xi, president of the Parent Teacher Association, and a founder and active member of the Florence Crittenton League.After moving to her family's home in East Sandwich in 1976, she became active in the Radcliffe and Harvard Clubs of Cape Cod as well as the Thornton Burgess Society and the East Sandwich Friends Meeting.As a young girl and later with her husband of51 years, she traveled widely, chalking up her 48th and 49th states in 2000.
A dedicated wife and mother, Mrs. George devoted much of her life to raising her 3 children.More recently, she cherished the time she spent with her 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Jean was the beloved wife of the late Elmer E. George, Jr., mother of William W. George and his wife Sarah of Middleton and Sandwich, Elizabeth G. Shallcross and her husband Peter of Foster, RI, and EdaU. ("Dee") George of Melrose, and dear sister of the late Philip D. Wilkinson.She was also the loving grandmother of Gordon Casey and his wife Sarah of Woburn, Bart George of Middleton, Amy Renner and her husband Neil of Richmond, VT,Joanna Lawlor and her husband Owen of Milton, Olivia George Burke and her husband Kyle of Springfield, OH, and Jeffrey Latham of Providence, RI, and the cherished great-grandmother of Ada and Zohy Renner, Thomas and Alexander Casey,Liam and Dallas George, and Jack Lawlor. She fondly remembered her Wilkinson nieces and nephews, James, Holly, Andrea, and Ted.
A remembrance of Jean's life will take place at the Friends Meeting House, 6 Quaker Rd., East Sandwich, on Thursday, August 5th at 1:00 pm.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.Gifts in her memory may be made to the East Sandwich Friends Meeting, P.
