Mrs. Jennie Mae (MacNeill) Matthes, of Malden, passed away peacefully at Winchester Hospital on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at age 93.
Jennie was born on October 25, 1920, one of five children of the late George L. MacNeill and Nettie Mae (McKinley) MacNeill.She was raised in Malden where she graduated from Malden High School.She worked for over 10 years as a secretary at John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston, then later for Malden Savings Bank as a Teller for several years.
Jennie was a Malden resident for most of her life.She lived in Malden from birth until 1986 when she moved to Exeter, New Hampshire, but returned to Malden in 2002.She was a longtime member of the Old & New Group of Malden.
Jennie's interests included knitting, and playing the piano and organ.She loved music, and was so talented she could learn to play a song just by listening to it.Jennie also loved butterflies, and above all else, her own homemade apple pie.
Jennie was the beloved wife of the late Frederick W. Matthes Sr. with whom she shared 63 years of marriage. Cherished mother of the late Frederick W. Matthes, Jr. and his wife Diane E. Matthes of Nashua, NH.Cherished sister of Blanche L. King of Melrose, and the late George L. MacNeill, Pearl M. Folland, and Ethel M. MacLeod. Loving grandmother of Eric H. Matthes of Alaska, and Scott H. Matthes of Montgomery, AL.Devoted great-grandmother of Hunter, Taylor, and Ever Matthes. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Jennie's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose during visiting hours on Tuesday, March 25 from 4-8 PM, and again for her Funeral Service celebrated at the Robinson Funeral Home on Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
