Mrs. Jessie L. "Penny" Chetwynd, a longtime Melrose resident, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, at the age of 88.
Jessie was born on September 17, 1923 in Freshwater, Newfoundland, one of seven and the only daughter of the late Thomas Penney and Leah (Butt) Penney.Jessie was raised in Victoria, Newfoundland where she graduated from high school.She came down from Canada at the young age of 20.
Jessie was known by all who knew and loved her as "Penny."She worked as a Nursery School Teacher at the Highlands Congregational Church for over 30 years.Penny loved gardening, her cats Missy and Sasha, spending the summers boating in Ossipee, New Hampshire, and enjoyed watching sports.
She was the beloved wife of the late Harold R. "Chet" Chetwynd with whom she shared nearly 57 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Donna J. Parsons and her late husband Richard E. of Wakefield, and Wayne R. Chetwynd of Melrose.Dear sister of Boyd, Ron, and Don Penney, all of Newfoundland, the late Lester, Fraser, and Doug Penney, and loving sister-in-law of James Chetwynd of Melrose, and Mildred Keohan of Salem, NH.Cherished grandmother of Heather J. Nehiley and her husband Josh of Nashua, NH, and Scott E. Parsons of Wakefield.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Penny's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, August 27 from 4-8 PM and again for her Funeral Service celebrated on Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
