Joan was born in Clinton on December 30, 1935, one of three children of the late Irene W. (Ferry) and S. Matthew Partridge. Raised in Clinton, Joan graduated from Clinton High School, Class of 1953, and from Becker Jr. College with a Secretarial Degree. She worked briefly for Mass Electric before her marriage to Rev. John W. Mortimer in 1961. As the wife of a Methodist Minister, they relocated regularly, but with Joan's strength she made a loving and supportive home for her family wherever they lived.
Tragically, John died at the age of 54 in 1989, however Joan's steadfast dedication to family never wavered. She re-entered the workforce with New England Electric Systems, and maintained her joys in life. She returned to her education and received a business degree from Manchester Community College.
Blessed with a beautiful voice, Joan received voice lessons at a young age. She enjoyed singing in many Church Choirs, performed with the Worcester Light Opera, andwas a member of many community choruses and performed various recitals over the years. With roots in Scotland, Joan's heritage held a special and dear place in her heart. Like her mother before her, Joan was a lifelong member of the Daughters of Scotia Thistle Lodge in Clinton/Worcester. She took great pride in the Scotland's culture while visiting Nova Scotia, attending the Highland Games, or listening to the Scottish Bagpipes.A renowned Scottish cook, the recipes passed down from her mother and grandmother always provided delicious food for every occasion.
A faith-filled woman, Joan was devoted to her Church through every stage of her life. After many years as a widow, Joan was blessed with her marriage to longtime friend Rev. Ned C. Watts. In her free time, she was a fruitful gardener who grew beautiful flowers, and many vegetables. She loved traveling, and took special delight anytime she was near the ocean. She was also a loyal longtime supporter of the Boston Red Sox.
Joan was a spirited and spunky woman who was incredibly strong in the face of any challenge. She will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered for her strength of will, loving nature, and kindness to all.
Joan was the beloved wife of the late Rev. John W. Mortimer and the late Rev. Ned C. Watts. Devoted mother of John W. Mortimer, Jr. and his wife Kathy of Easthampton, and Rev. Glenn M. Mortimer and his wife Elizabeth of Wakefield. Cherished grandmother of Matthew Mortimer of Wakefield. Dear sister of the late Glen and Douglas Partridge. Also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
Out of respect and concern for public health, relatives and friends will gather privately to honor and celebrate Joan's life. Interment will be in the family lot at Woodlawn Cemetery, Clinton. If you wish, contributions may be made in Joan's memory to the Joan Mortimer-Watts Memorial Fund, c/o Wakefield-Lynnfield United Methodist Church, 273 Vernon St., Wakefield MA 01880.
