Mr. John H. Allen, Jr., a lifelong resident of Melrose, passed away suddenly on February 18, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital, at age 96.
He was born in Chelsea on January 4, 1918, one of two children of the late John H. Allen and Helen G. (Robinson) Allen. He graduated from Melrose High School with the Class of 1936, and finally settled on Lincoln Street in Melrose. John served as a Bombardier during World War II in the US Army Air Corps. He successfully completed over 50 missions over Germany, France, Italy, and the Balkans and received 6 Bronze Stars for his dedicated service.
John began his working career as an apprentice at the Watertown Arsenal in 1939. After an interruption during WWII, he continued working as a tool-master and later was brought into the office at the Arsenal. In 1967, John was transferred to the Boston Naval Shipyard in Charlestown where he worked for 7 years until retiring as an industrial engineer.
John was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and the Aleppo Temple Shrine. With a lifelong interest in learning, John participated in the Elder Hostel Education program for many years.
Mr. Allen was the beloved husband of Dorothy L. (Campbell) Allen with whom he shared nearly 70 years of marriage. Devoted father of Annette A. Hilton of Redwood City, CA, and the late Gretchen L. Allen. Dear brother of the late Alfreda Glover. Loving grandfather of Teresa of CA. Caring uncle of Linda Gilbert of CA, and Cynthia Lehmann of CA. John is also survived by many devoted longtime friends, and his caring Melrose neighbors.
Funeral Services are private. Interment in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
