John P. Bulman Sr., a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, at age 90.
John was born in Melrose on August 4, 1934, the eldest of two sons of the late Carmella (Gianquitto) Bulman and Thomas S. Bulman. A 1952 graduate of Malden High School, John's strong work ethic was instilled while he was raised during the Great Depression. After high school, John worked for many years at the Malden Trust Company, while attending night school at the American Institute of Banking. In February of 1957, John's sense of duty led him to enlist in the US Army, serving honorably for 2 years, and forever remaining a proud and patriotic man. After serving his country, John attended Bentley College where he earned his Associate's and Bachelor's Degree in accounting. On a blind date, he met and fell in love with Mary and they married in 1961. They settled in Melrose to raise a family of two children.
Intelligent, hardworking, and disciplined, John worked for Raytheon Corp. from 1960 until 1992. At Raytheon, he held several positions in accounting and finance, retiring as a Senior Cost Accounting Manager. Also during his time at Raytheon, John earned a Master's in Business Administration. Well respected by his peers, John fulfilled his duties with selfless determination and dedication to the team.
Raised by his mother with help from his two Italian aunts, John's loyalty to family and love for a good meal came naturally from his childhood. Traditional family values, respect for all, and pride in work were the hallmarks of his life. After retiring from Raytheon, John found enjoyment in the less corporate position of "stock boy" at Macy's in Peabody. The easy conversations in the domestics department at Macys brought him laughter and joy, keeping his busy mind social and active. A lifelong learner, John read the newspaper daily, loved sudoku, continued educating himself and furthering his knowledge of the world and politics. In his free time, he was an avid Red Sox fan, and enjoyed vacationing with family throughout the US and special destinations in Europe.
Most of all, John's cherished his role as a grandfather to John Thomas, John Patrick, and Julia Grace. His grandchildren continued enriching his life as he became actively involved in each of their lives. He was always present, and early for every birthday, holiday, graduation or event and delighted in seeing his grandchildren even if just dropping off or picking up.
As the patriarch, John was the quiet strength, reliable rock, and humble backbone of his family. He lived life with a sense of purpose and he fulfilled his duties with dedication to those around him. John will be deeply and sorely missed, but his unconditional kindness and fairness to all will continue to inspire the lives of his family and friends.
John was the beloved husband of the late Mary A. (McMahon) Bulman with whom he shared 44 years of marriage. Devoted father of John P. Bulman, Jr. and his wife Linda Hutchinson-Bulman of Melrose and Carol A. Adiletto-Francis and her husband Stephen J.Francis of Wakefield. Dear brother of James L. Bulman and his wife Marion of Reno, NV. Loving grandfather of John T. Adiletto, John P. Bulman III and Julia G. Bulman. Predeceased by his lifelong friend, Gerry McCarthy, and survived by many dear friends from Macy's Dept. Store and the Melrose Towers.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather in honor of John's life during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, March 2 from 2-5pm, and again on Monday at 9am before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose for his Funeral Mass celebrated at 10am. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. In lieu of flowers, gifts in John's memory may be made to A Servant's Heart Food Pantry, 200 Franklin Street, Melrose, MA 02176.
