Mr. John J. Devine, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at Oosterman's Rest Home in Melrose on Sunday, March 10, 2013.He was 90 years of age.
He was born on October 18, 1922 in Medford, one of six children of the late James and Mary (Doherty) Devine.He graduated from Medford High School and from the University of Massachusetts. John had a distinguished career as an analyst with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 20 years.
John served his country with honor as a Medic during World War II in the United States Army.His service became a significant part of his life as he was forever a proud WWII veteran and had a strong love for his country.He regularly attended all veterans meetings and supported local events through the VFW Post #2394 where he was a longtime active member.
A faithful parishioner, Mr. Devine was an active member of St. Mary's Church where he served as Head Usher for many years.
Mr. Devine was the beloved husband of the late Helen M. (Nee) Devine with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.Devoted father of Patricia Devine and her husband William Phinney of Melrose.Dear brother of Helen Devine of Medford, the late James Devine, Edward Devine, Mary Coleman, and G. Anne Devine.Cherished grandfather of Yelena, Marina, Vyacheslav, and Damian.Also survived by Caliegh Murphy and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember John's life by gathering during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, March 15 from 4-8PM, and again on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.Late veteran US Army WWII.
