Mr. John Hubert Hawkes, of Melrose and formerly a longtime resident of Wyoming, New York, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 18, 2009.He was 80 years old.John was born on April 23, 1929 in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Thomas Arthur Hawkes and Theresa M. (Perger) Hawkes.Mr. Hawkes enlisted in the US Army at the age of 17 and served in the Korean War.He graduated from Alfred University in New York with a degree in Ceramics Engineering and lived most of his adult life in Wyoming, New York.He worked in the ceramics abrasives industry as a technical director for many years at Norton Company in Worcester, Carborundum, and Bay State Abrasives.As an inventor and thinker, he developed many patents in the field of grinding technology.John was also a member and past president of the Middlebury Historical Society and in the 1970's served as Deputy Mayor for the town of Wyoming, NY.He loved nature and enjoyed photography, fine arts, and film.He was the devoted father of John E. Hawkes and his wife Claudia of Beverly Farms and Holly Markham and her husband John of Melrose.Dear brother of the late Ted Hawkes and Robert Hawkes.Cherished grandfather of Evan Hawkes, Colin Hawkes, Elsa Hawkes, Owen Markham and James Markham.Former husband of Phyllis (Galanto) Hawkes of Brewster.
