J. Thomas "Tom" Montgomery, III, longtime resident of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington, at age 76.
Tom was born in Somerville on March 15, 1948, one of three children of the late John T. "Jack" Montgomery Jr. and Louise (Heighe) Montgomery. After moving to Woburn and attending Woburn schools, Tom met the love of his life, Nancy Barr in high school, and stayed high school sweethearts for the next 52 years. He and Nancy were married on September 2, 1972 and settled in Melrose in 1975 to raise a family of two daughters. Continuing a family tradition, Tom became a union glass glazier with Local #1044 and spent over 40 years perfecting his trade and supporting fellow members through his work as an officer with IUPAT DC 35. Tom also generously shared his knowledge as an apprentice teacher, giving back to the trade and serving as a resource for others before reaching retirement at 62, but continued as a proud union member for over 50 years.
Skilled and precise in woodworking, Tom refinished much of his home himself, taking great pride in the process and crafting a beautiful home for his family. Tom was happiest outside gardening with Nancy by his side, sharing his sense of humor, and patiently landscaping the yard to perfection.
Inspired by his love of cars, Tom carefully restored a 1966 Chevy Corvette with exacting detail, and no short cuts. He especially enjoyed attending car shows with his brother Ron. Every summer with Nancy and his closest friends, he looked forward to the thrill of watching annual Lobster Boat Races in Boothbay Harbor.
Tom's favorite place was the family home on Cystal Lake in Gray, Maine where he was at his most calm sitting on the dock watching the lake. Tom was always delighted to spend time with his children, and grandchildren (and his favorite pup Annie), and attended so many hockey, baseball games, and dance recitals. A loyal friend, Tom enjoyed lasting relationships with his closest friends and was beloved for his good humor and generous heart.
Thoughtful, patient and calm, Tom was the ever steady rock of the family. His tough exterior masked his gentle, kind spirit that everyone knew, and loved. His sarcasm always received a laugh, but he was known equally for his intelligence and high standards. His love of family was everything, and everyone knew and felt it.
Tom Montgomery was simply a good, devoted husband and father who all could admire. He will be missed deeply, but the values instilled and the love he shared will continue in the hearts and minds of his family. May he rest in peace.
Tom was the beloved husband of Nancy J. (Barr) Montgomery with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. Devoted father of Jessica Carroll and her husband Paul of Reading, and Ashley Montgomery of Melrose. Dear brother of Ron Montgomery and his wife Karen of Stoneham, and Kevin Montgomery and his wife Susan Cappola of Ipswich. Cherished grandfather of Riley and Graham. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather in honor of Tom’s life during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Thursday, July 25 from 4-8pm, and for his Funeral Service on Friday, July 26 at 10am. If you wish, donations in memory of Tom may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 209 W. Central St., Ste 207, Natick MA 01760 or online at www.kidney.org
