Mr. John W. Bishop, Sr., a longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2016 at Colonial Poplin Nursing Home in Fremont, NH, at age 92.
John was born in Malden on October 2, 1923 and raised in Everett by Gould W. and Edna M. (Turner) Taylor. He was a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1942 and served his country proudly in the Pacific Theatre during WWII in the US Marine Corps. Following his honorable discharge, he received training in accounting at Bentley College. Mr. Bishop worked for Sylvania for many years where he received awards for his achievements. He then worked for United Shoe Machinery in management and accounting positions for many years. After gaining accounting experience, John moved into various management positions at Bank of America, and the O'Connor Construction Company.
John was an intelligent, analytical thinker with great aptitude for how things work and overseeing implementation. He loved tinkering around the house, and attempting to fix anything mechanical. From a young age, he was a strong, independent thinker with a laser focus. When he set his mind to a particular subject or goal, he was not to be denied.
In his free time, he enjoyed going for drives in his large Buicks or Lincolns to see New England. He had an interest in the stock market, and loved the Big Band era of 1940's. John was a devoted family man with a tough military exterior and kind heart. He loved his grandchildren, doted on his wife Ingrid, and loved going out to dinner with his family.He will be missed.
John was beloved husband of the late Ingrid E. (Pearson) Bishop with whom he shared 40 years of marriage.Devoted father of John W. Bishop, Jr. of Boston and his partner Patricia Sullivan, David A. Bishop and his wife Sandra of Sandown, NH, and the late Judith A. Lenk. Dear brother of the late Clinton T. Bishop. Loving grandfather of Jeffrey and Michael Lenk, and Cara and Cameron Bishop.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of John's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, March 7 from 4-8pm, and again on Tuesday for his Funeral Service celebrated at 10am. Interment with military honors by the US Marine Corps in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
