Mr. John J. Wells, of Saugus, formerly of Melrose, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018 after a hard-fought battle with emphysema and heart disease at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, at age 77.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on March 14, 1941, John was the eldest of six children. Raised in Melrose, he graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1958 and was married to Janice D. Ralston on May 14, 1966. He served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1969. John called Melrose home for nearly 60 years, before moving to Sheffield Heights in 2004. A hard working man, he worked for 30 years at the Boston Edison Company, in addition to having his own painting and wallpaper business.
Throughout his life, John shared his many strengths with others. After retiring from Boston Edison, he helped students as an algebra tutor at Melrose High School. He also enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball and Bantam Youth Hockey in Melrose. After moving to Saugus, John served on the Sheffield Heights Condo Association Committee.
John was a wonderful husband, Dad, and Pop-Pop. He was the master of spontaneity with his family, who enjoyed many memories vacationing along the seacoast of Maine.
John loved classic rock, Pepsi, surprising his wife with gifts, and numbers. John will be deeply missed, but the critical life skills of a strong work ethic and tenacity he instilled in his children will carry on as his legacy.
John is predeceased by his mother and father, Eulalia C. (Johnson) "Nana" Wells and John J. "Jack" Wells; and his sister, Deborah Wells.
John is survived by his beloved wife of almost 52 years, Janice Ralston Wells; his daughter, Monica Sullivan and her husband Paul of Newton; his son, John "Jake" Wells of Saugus; his grandsons, Jack and Patrick Sullivan; his siblings, Jane Jack and her husband Doug of Windham, NH, Greg Wells and his wife Dawn of Brockton, Sara Beauchamp and her husband Phil of Woburn, and Lisa Masters of Jamestown, NY. Also survived by 19 nieces and nephews.
