Mr. Joseph F. Irvin, of Haverhill, and formerly of Everett, passed away peacefully at home on March 1, 2014, at age 88.
He was born on November 17, 1925 in Boston, one of four sons of the late John N. and Frances V. (Mahoney) Irvin.He was raised in Charlestown and enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17.Mr. Irvin proudly served his country for four years during World War II.After an honorable discharge, he completed his high school education by taking classes at night while he worked on bridges for the State of Massachusetts during the day.In 1963, he became a budget analyst for the Massachusetts State Legislature until retiring from that position in 1981.He then worked in the accounting department at the Watertown Arsenal until fully retiring in 1988.
Mr. Irvin's passion in life was supporting local Massachusetts politics.He was a firm believer in active community participation and making the place you live, the best it could be. He had a love for history and served on the Board of Directors for the Wounded Warriors Project in Boston for several years.He was also a member of the VFW Posts in Malden and Everett.
More recently, Mr. Irvin enjoyed time with his great-grandchildren by leading them on adventurous walks, playing board games, or entertaining them with old war stories.
He will be remembered as the beloved husband of the late Allene H. (McKinnon) Irvin with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.Devoted father of Darlene DePasquale, Valerie Master, Lisa Beth Reynolds and her husband James F. of Bradford, and the late Marilyn Irvin.Dear brother the late John, Paul, and William Irvin.Cherished grandfather of Christopher Berthiaume, Adam Berthiaume, Jon David Berthiaume, Stephen Berthiaume, Nico DePasquale, John M. Lagorio, Jr., Molly Master, and Emily DaSilva.Loving great-grandfather of Brandon, Kyle, Nathan, and Abigail.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Joseph's life by gathering during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, March 5 from 9-10AM, followed by a Graveside Service with military honors presented by the US Navy at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 12:45 PM.
