Mr. Joseph P. Monteforte, a resident of Osterville and formerly of Stoneham, passed away peacefully at Genesis at Wakefield Center on Wednesday morning, December 26, 2012.He was 99 years of age.
Joseph was born on April 20, 1913 in Everett, a son of the late Carmen and Laura (Lepore) Monteforte.
He was raised and educated in Medford and served his country in the US Army during World War II.He was stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea, Australia, and was appointed a Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Corps by General McArthur.After his honorable discharge, he graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and worked at Lepore Pharmacy in Medford, and Fredericks Pharmacy in Stoneham.Joe then began his second career at the First Boston Postal District where he was in charge of Customer Relations.After 25 years with the Post Office, he retired as an Administrator. Shortly thereafter, he began working on his third career for New Seabury Corp. as a furniture refinisher.In his spare time, Joe loved working in his yard.
Joseph was the beloved husband of Mary L. (McCarthy) Monteforte, and the late Moana (Lewis) Monteforte. Father of Gail Monteforte and her partner James Murnak of New York City, and Paul Monteforte of SC, stepfather of Jean A. O'Toole and her husband Jack Welch of Melrose, and the late Maureen M. Welch, and Martha O'Toole. Dear brother of the late Margaret Petruzzi. Also survived by 4 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Joseph's life by gathering at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 76 Wianno Ave., Osterville where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday January 5, 2013 at 11AM.
