Joseph P. O’Connor, of Saugus and formerly of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the age of 82.
Born on July 9, 1942, in Somerville, Joe grew up in Somerville, where he graduated from Saint Clement High School before furthering his studies at Northeastern University.
Joe served proudly in the United States Army, demonstrating a commitment to his country that he carried with him throughout his life. After his service, he forged a meaningful career with the U.S. Postal Service. From his beginnings as a letter carrier and postal clerk to ultimately becoming a supervisor at the Melrose Post Office, Joe was deeply proud of the work he did and the community he served.
A family man at heart, his love for his family was evident in everything he did, always making sure that everyone was cared for and felt valued.
Joe's Catholic faith played a significant role in his life, providing him with strength and solace. He cherished the simple pleasures in life, especially his time spent in Grafton New Hampshire. He found joy swimming in Kilton Pond, soaking up the sun at Hampton Beach, and making memorable camping trips to Quebec, Canada.
Joe loved working with his hands building and doing home projects. He always found satisfaction in collecting tools and being outdoors.
Joe touched the lives of many with his kindness and warmth. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered forever in our hearts.
Joe was the beloved husband of Theresa M. (Tuohy) O’Connor with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Devoted father of Brian O’Connor of Melrose, George O’Connor of Medford, Kevin O’Connor of Saugus, Tara Bicknell and her husband Phil of Chelmsford, and Sean O’Connor of Melrose. Dear brother of the late Particia O’Connor. Cherished grandfather of Ryleigh and Brayden.
Relatives & friends are invited to gather in honor of Joe during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 4-7pm, and again on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 9am before leaving in procession to St. Mary’s Church, Herbert St., Melrose for his Funeral Mass celebrated at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to a Catholic charity of your choice in Joe's name.
