Mrs. Kathleen (Painter) Bemiss, of Melrose, formerly of Malden, died Saturday evening, October 24, 2009 in Wilmington Healthcare Center. She was 93. Kathleen was born on November 27, 1915 in Bayonne, New Jersey a daughter of the late Winfield W. and Gertrude (Boden) Painter. She was raised and educated in New Jersey and graduated from Burdett College, formerly Burdett Business School. In addition to raising her family she worked for many years in the business office at the Malden Evening News.

Mrs. Bemiss shared 67 years of marriage with her late husband, Ellis A. Bemiss.She lived in Malden for over 20 years before moving to Melrose with her family in 1955.An active member of the First Congregational Church, she served on the education commission, Women's Guild, Circle of Friends, and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program. She was also active in the American Red Cross. She and her husband also enjoyed membership in an informal supper club' where six couples would meet for dinner on Saturday nights once a month. They carried this much loved tradition on for over 40 years.

She leaves her two sons, Geoffrey A. Bemiss and his wife, Patricia, of North Reading and Alan P. Bemiss and his late wife, Barbara, of Melrose; a sister, Eleanor O'Neal of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren, Scott Bemiss and his wife, Kathleen, of Bedford, NH, Brian Bemiss and his wife, Lora, of Quincy, Philip Bemiss and his wife, Julie, of Atlanta, Geoffrey Bemiss II and Stephanie Poulin of Sumter, SC and Melissa Ziegler and her husband, Dustin, of Groton; six great-grandchildren, William, Madeline, Sophia, Caitlyn and Porter Bemiss and Aiden Ziegler; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ellis A. Bemiss who died in August 2004, a daughter-in-law, Barbara J. (Rowland) Bemiss who died in May 2009 and a sister, Marjorie Morse.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in The First Congregational Church, 121 West Foster Street, Melrose. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours in The Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Melrose from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose will be held at a later date.Memorials in her name may be made to National Brain Tumor Society, 124 Watertown St., Suite 2D, Watertown, MA 02472.
