Mrs. Katie O. Kay' (Stewart) Davis, of Melrose, died Sunday, September 12, 2010 unexpectedly in her home. She was 87 years old.
Katie was born October 3, 1922 in Fresno, California, one of seven children of the late Ira and Anna (Ball) Stewart and was a graduate of Tulare High School.Her late husband, Sumner C. Davis, Sr. was in the service and stationed in California. After a courtship and marriage she moved to his native Massachusetts settling in Melrose in 1945.She and her family maintained a summer home for the last 55 years in Wakefield, New Hampshire.
During World War II, she worked as a long distance telephone operator. Later, she worked at the Chief Telephone Operator for R.C.A for over 13 years before retiring in 1992.
Kay loved her family. She loved cooking and was an avid golfer in which she won several trophies. A member of the First Baptist Church, she was a member of the Friendship Circle and enjoyed volunteering at Feed My Sheep.'She also volunteered in the gift shop at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Margaret Caudle and her late husband, Marshall, of Tulare, CA, Louise Hicks and her late husband, Jake, of Fresno, CA, Dorothy Caudle and her late husband, Gene, of Visalia, CA, Genelle Nash and her late husband, Pete, of Eugene, WA, Beverly Wheeler and her late husband, Velden, of Portland, OR, and Galen Stewart of Fresno, CA.
Kay was the beloved wife of the late Sumner C. Davis Sr. with whom she shared 64 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Stephen E. Davis and his wife, Kathy, ofWeymouth, Pamela E. Overton of Stoneham, Paula J. Edwards and her husband, Tim, of Melrose and Sumner C. Davis, Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Stoneham. Cherished grandmother of Russell Davis, Amy MacDonald, Jeanette Davis, Ben Overton, John Edwards and his wife, Danielle, Corey Edwards and his wife, Anne Marie, Elissa Davis and Brittany Davis. Loving great-grandmother of Maddie MacDonald, Samantha and Jack Edwards and Alexis Edwards; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service at the First Baptist Church, 561 Main St., Melrose on Friday, September 17 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday from 4 - 8PM.Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.Gifts in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, 561 Main Street, Melrose, MA 02176.
