Kevin Patrick Carbin

Kevin Patrick Carbin, 93, passed away with dignity, lucidity, and thoughtfulness on September 6, 2016 at his home in Scarborough, ME. His son Kevin, Jr. was at his side.He was born in Strabane, Co. Tyrone, Ireland, to Thomas Carbin and Catherine (Lambe) Carbin.

As a toddler Kevin moved to the United States where his family soon settled in Melrose, MA., and would grow to become a lively family of twelve, with eight boys and two girls. There he attended both St. Mary's Catholic School and Melrose High School.

During WWII Kevin joined the Navy, and was fortunate to hear that the war ended before his ship reached its destination in the Pacific.Finding an interest in aviation and mechanics, he pursued training in both while in the service. He later became certified as a pilot, and owned and flew his own small airplane for a time.

After meeting his beloved Genevieve (Orr) Carbin of Stoneham, MA, he vowed to find proper employment to raise a family before proposing marriage, and was soon hired by General Electric, contributing his skills for thirty-six years to the company. He and Genevieve married in 1951 and raised their four children in Melrose and Malden.

Kevin was always proud of his children, and was steadfast and devoted through the long illness of his wife Genevieve, deftly tending to her when ill while managing his job, their rental properties, and helping with the busy pace of everyday family life. Genevieve passed away in 1979.

He was introduced to Mary (Dagg) Carbin of Valencia, CA through West Coast family, and they struck up a romance, deciding to marry in 1986. They spent twenty-five years together in sunny California before deciding on an amicable divorce.

At the age of 87, Kevin decided to come back East to be near his children, settling in Scarborough. His New England family were delighted to have him back, and he made it clear that he thought coming home was the best decision he'd ever made. While visits with family were his most cherished times, he was also an avid reader, especially of American History, a font of knowledge about politics, and a whiz at a crossword puzzle.Watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, his home teams, were highlights for him, too.

While fortunate to have lived an exceptionally healthy life, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis began to impair Kevin's breathing capacity over his last several years. Even so, he maintained a sense of calm and dry Irish wit to the end with nary a complaint. At the same time, his heart seemed to expand with kindness. He will be remembered for his generous and inclusive style and for how he instilled, by example, a sense of loyalty, honesty, humility, and patience in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Kevin was preceded in death by his granddaughter Erin Coffey, and by his first wife Genevieve (Orr) Carbin.

He is survived by his children, Janet Carbin of Tilton, NH, Susan Carbin-Hardee and her husband Chris Hardee of West Chesterfield, NH, Julie Carbin of Gloucester, MA, and Kevin (Skip) Carbin Jr, and his wife Maura Canny Carbin (his loving and attentive right-hand helper extraordinaire), of Scarborough ME.Surviving also are grandchildren Meghan (Coffey) Kaiser and husband Ron Kaiser of Moultonborough, NH, Rya Hardee-Fauth of Burlington, VT, Toren Hardee of New Orleans, LA, Cooper Hardee of Paris, France, Molly Carbin of Boston MA and Maggie Carbin of Scarborough, ME, great-grandchildren Rose Coffey-Hopping of Kittery ME and William Kaiser of Moultonborough, NH, his siblings, Sister Nell Carbin of Philadelphia, PA, and Richard Carbin of Austin TX, and beloved sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
