Mrs. McCaffrey was born in Boston on November 5, 1930, a daughter of the late William Kelly and Leona (Peterson) Kelly. She was raised and educated in Charlestown and lived in Melrose for the last 35 years.For many years she worked as a waitress at the Donut Shoppe in downtown Melrose and later, at Cappa's Trackside Kitchen.She was a longtime devoted parishioner of St. Mary's Church where she was a member of the Ladies Sodality and worked as an aide at the pre-k/k classes through the Foster Grandparents - which she really loved doing for 5 or 6 years. She was a devoted mother to six children and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She will be missed.
Leonawas the beloved wife of the late Ralph T. McCaffrey with whom she shared 41 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Janice A. Goehring and her husband Bill of San Diego, CA, Karen L. Barrows and her husband Lou of Melrose,Ralph M. MCaffrey of Daytona, FL, Patricia L. Jillson and her husband Damon of Hartford, VT, Martin K. McCaffrey and his wife Kai of Norwich, CT and Rita F. Hickey and her husband James of Plaistow, NH. Dear sister of Eugene Kelly of Abington and the late Muriel Wilson, Lois Bluhm and James Kelly. Cherished nana of Louis, Jennifer, Daniel, Stephanie, Matthew, Ralph, Kevin, Christine, Lori Ann, Damon, Brian, Leanne, Ronnie, Saangphet, Boun-tai, Joseph, Jaime, Christopher and Jonathan.Also survived by 28 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Leona's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday from 2-6 PM and again on Monday morning at 9 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
