Mr. Leonard G. Locke, a resident of Stoneham and formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Woodbriar at Wilimington, at the age of 87.

Mr. Locke was born on February 21, 1925 in Melrose, one of five children of the late Harold C. and Ruth (Brooks) Locke.He graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1942 where he played basketball, baseball, and ran cross country.Upon graduating from high school, Leonard served his country in the United States Army during World War II.He received a degree from Bentley College and began working at State Street Bank and Trust where his career spanned 43 years, retiring as Vice President.

Beginning in high school Leonard loved running and that passion continued throughout much of his life.He enjoyed running 10K races, and especially looked forward to the "Beach to Beacon Road Race" in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, running alongside his grandchildren for many years.Enthusiastic about sports, Leonard also coached basketball, Little League Baseball, and enjoyed watching the Boston Celtics.

Mr. Locke was the beloved husband of Nancy (Taylor) Locke with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.Devoted father of Bruce Locke and his wife Jennifer Moss of Sacramento, CA, Connie L. Quigley and her husband Jon of S. Portland, ME, Malcolm B. Locke of Coppell, TX, and the late Richard M. Locke.Dear brother of Harold B. "Bud" Locke of DE, Beryl Brown of Melrose, and the late Stanley U. Locke, and Marion R. Lichtenstein.Cherished grandfather of Caroline Q. Phillips of S. Portland, ME, Kevin T. Quigley of Topsham, ME, Katherine Quigley of S. Portland, ME, and Rachael McGovern of Salem, NH.Loving great-grandfather of Charlotte, Alden, and Cody.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor of Leonard's life privately. Gifts may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
