Lester Colby Peabody

Mr. Lester C. Peabody, a longtime resident of Melrose and principal of Peabody Office Furniture, a leader in the office furniture industry, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 surrounded by his family.He was 101 years old.

Lester was born in Melrose on July 28, 1908, son of the late Lorenzo J. Peabody and Charlotte (Colby) Peabody.

Lester C. Peabody graduated from Boston University in 1931.He learned the office furniture business from his father, Lorenzo, who had founded the company in 1899 as a typewriter and sales shop on Devonshire Street in Boston.Soon he moved into the growing office furniture business, focusing on always putting the "customer first."Lester carried on his father's business philosophy and lead the firm through the Great Depression, World War II and into the modern era.

For more than 70 years, Lester set the standard of excellence for his company, steadily growing Peabody Office Furniture into a Boston tradition and one of New England's most prominent office furniture dealers.

Right up to his passing, Lester remained current on the family business and the overall Boston business community. In addition to his devotion to his family and business, Lester was equally renowned for his compassion, humility and generosity. As a member of various boards, he contributed and worked on behalf of many causes and organizations.A member of the First United Methodist Church for over 80 years, Lester was actively involved with the church and the Preachers Aid Society of New England.He also served on the board of directors at the Melrose YMCA as well as Melrose Savings Bank.Perhaps most dear to him was his involvement and support of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston as well as the New England Deaconess Association of Concord, MA.

Lester C. Peabody was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis E. (Pingree) Peabody. Devoted father of Jonathan C. Peabody and his wife Norma of Topsfield, Lorna J. Philley and her husband George of Melrose, and Martha L. Peabody of Gloucester. Cherished grandfather of Christopher C. Peabody and his wife Julie of N. Reading, Stephen D. Peabody and his wife Aimee of Marblehead, Daniel K. Peabody and his wife Grace of Topsfield, Jennifer L. Zolot and her husband Ken of Cambridge, Glen A. Philley of Melrose, Daniel J. MacMonagle of Stoneham, and Jeffrey S. MacMonagle of Melrose. Loving great grandfather of Merina L. Peabody and George C. Peabody, both of North Reading.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 645 Main St., Melrose, on Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 at 10:30 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Gifts in Mr. Peabody's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 645 Main St., Melrose, MA 02176 or to the New England Deaconess Association, 80 Deaconess Rd., Concord, MA 01742.
