Lewis H. "Big Lou" Riley

Mr. Lewis H. "Big Lou" Riley, a resident of Melrose and formerly of Malden, died following an accident on Monday, October 11, 2010 at Massachusetts General Hospital.He was 71 years old.

Lewis H. Riley was born in Malden on October 25, 1938, a son of the late Walter Riley and Mabel (Huff) Riley.

Lou was raised and educated in Malden.A longtime iron worker, Lou was a member of Local 7 for many years. During his iron working career, he travelled to Alaska to work on the Alaskan Pipe Line and for 10 years owned and operated "Big Lou's Sub City" on Exchange Street in Malden.More recently, Lou enjoyed working for the City of Malden in parking enforcement.

Lou, or "Big Lou" as he was affectionately known, especially loved horse racing and would travel to Saratoga, NY once a year to watch the horse races.He was also a former member of the Irish-American Club and will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Big Lou was the beloved husband of Norma A. (Gillis) Riley with whom he shared 41 years of marriage.Loving father of Mark Riley and his wife Genevieve of Saugus, Denise Hart and her husband Richard of Londonderry, NH, Wendy Riley of Saugus, Molly Whisler and her husband Phil of Medford, Bridget Braverman and her husband Shane of Cambridge, and the late Shannon Riley and Katie Riley.Cherished grandfather of Derek, Anthony, and Catherine Riley, Alexandra, Aleah, Richard, and Robert Hart, and Emma, Jacob, Madeleine, and Kathleen Whisler. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, October 15 at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in honor and remembrance of Big Lou in Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield, at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours on Thursday from 4-8.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
