Mr. Lincoln B. Balcom, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, at the age of 83.
Mr. Balcom was born in Somerville on March 2, 1928, one of three sons of the late Howard Balcom and Madeline (Nickerson) Balcom. He was raised and educated in Cambridge and attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy. For many years, Lincoln worked as an operator for DuPont Chemical Co. on the south shore. He was a longtime member of the Malden Church of the Nazarene.
Linc was an avid sports fan. He followed all the Boston sports teams, and for years supported Melrose High School sports, especially basketball and volleyball, as well as intercity league baseball. He was a voracious reader of books, and also enjoyed playing bridge, doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles, and was hard to beat in cribbage. Lincoln was known for his great sense of humor, his work ethic, and his humility. He will be forever missed.
Lincoln was the beloved husband of Caroline (Hathaway) Balcom with whom he shared 48 years of marriage. Devoted father of Lynne M. Balcom Smith and her husband Peter Smith of West Newbury. Loving brother of the late Warren Balcom and his wife Jackie of Tewksbury, and the late Norman Balcom and his late wife Joan. Cherished grandfather of Ryan and Sage Smith of W. Newbury. Dear in-law of Helga Seibert of Laconia, NH and William "Bill" Smith of Arlington, VA. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Lincoln by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, February 27 from 4-7 PM, and for Funeral Services to be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the Malden Church of the Nazarene, 529 Eastern Ave., Malden. Private interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster.
