Mrs. Linda A. (Bowman) Harrington, of Melrose, died Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton.She was 70.
She was born August 9, 1942 in Cambridge. Linda was the daughter of the late John W. and Margaret E. (McCarthy) Bowman. Raised in the Allston neighborhood of Boston, she graduated from Brighton High School and attended Boston University.
Linda was married in 1974 to the late William D. Harrington who died March 5, 1995. She is also predeceased by a step-son, William M. "Billy" Harrington.
She worked over 25 years in the Financial Aid Office at Boston University.In 1997 she took a position at George Washington University (GWU) where she later became its Director of Financial Aid.She worked in that position for over 15 years receiving a number of awards from the school for service to the student body and dedication to the university. She retired early this year and returned to Massachusetts.
Linda was a prolific reader and enjoyed keeping her mind active with puzzles, crosswords and a weekly tradition of the New York Times crossword. She was an avid fan of NASCAR, and enjoyed the music of Willie Nelson and Roy Orbison. Perhaps in part of her much loved connection to Boston University she was a huge fan of the Bean Pot and the B.U. Hockey team.
She leaves her step-children, Sandra Becker and her husband, Bruce, of Westford, Jo-Ann Harrington of Lowell and Joseph Harrington and his wife, Stacy, of Melrose; her brothers,Kevin Bowman and his wife, Rosina "Kitty" of Brighton and Robert Bowman of Allston; her grandchildren, Julie Becker and Amanda, Lindsey, Alexander, Kaitlin and Ethan Harrington; her great-grandchild, Jayden Harrington; her nephew John and niece Jennifer.Linda also leaves a very close friend at GWU, Catherine Romanowski.
Family and friends will honor and remember Linda's life by gathering for a calling hour on Tuesday, July 16th from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m.Both will be held at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Melrose.Burial will follow at the Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
