Mrs. Lois "Buddy" (Long) Stone, of Peabody and formerly of Melrose, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2011 at Renaissance Gardens of Brooksby Village in Peabody.She was 90 years old.
Lois was born on September 15, 1920 in Meriden, Connecticut, the daughter of the late James H. Long and Marion L. (Williams) Long.
Lois or "Buddy" as she was well known, was raised in New Haven, CT and Melrose, MA.She graduated from Melrose High School in 1938, University of Maine in 1942, and attended Salem State College.She married her loving husband George William Stone in 1949 and worked as a special needs teacher for much of her career.
Mrs. Stone was a Business and Professional Girls Director for the YMCAs in Cambridge, Brockton, Worcester, and Boston.As one of the first learning disability teachers in the country, she was a dedicated educator for many years.She worked in Melrose for 20 years at the Franklin School as a special education teacher.
In her leisure time, Buddy enjoyed knitting, reading, sewing and giving dinner parties.She loved to travel, cook, and play board games.She was also a Girl Scout Leader and a member of Phi Theta Kappa Society.She will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She was the beloved wife of George William "Bill" Stone with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Priscilla S. Stevens and her husband Jonathan of Carlisle.Cherished grandmother of Katherine S. Getchell and her husband Greg of Littleton, Clifford S. Stevens and his wife Tiffany of Boston and great-grandmother of Sophia E. Getchell of Littleton.
Memorial Service in honor and celebration of her life at the Brooksby Village Chapel, 100 Brooksby Village Dr., Peabody on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 11:30 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, August 22 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM.
