Mrs. Lucy E. (Duffy) Ward, age 90, of Melrose and formerly of Fall River and Westport, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, June 13, 2012 at Oosterman's Rest Home in Melrose.
Lucy was born on September 26, 1921 in Fall River, one of two daughters of the late Henry J. Duffy and Lillian E. (Holden) Duffy.Raised in Fall River, she graduated from Durfee High School and from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Class of 1943.Along with her late husband, Harold, Lucy owned and operated the pharmacy that her father started, the Henry J. Duffy Pharmacy, in Fall River. A registered pharmacist, Lucy's strong will and determination allowed her to operate the pharmacy long after Harold died in 1972.She worked until she was 70 years old, finally retiring and moving to Melrose to be closer to her family.
Lucy was very involved with the Girl Scouts.As a child she attained the highest rank as an Eagle Scout, and later in life served as the President of the Girl Scout Council in Fall River.A woman of great faith and devotion, she was a parishioner at Our Lady of Grace Church in Westport for many years and served as a Eucharistic minister. She was baptized, confirmed and married at The Immaculate Conception Parish in Fall River. She also received the Marian Award from the Fall River Diocese. After moving to Melrose, she became very active at St. Mary's Church, where she served as a Lector and was a member of the Lady's Sodality.
She was the beloved wife of the late Harold E. Ward with whom she shared 27 years of marriage.Devoted and loving mother of Henry D. Ward and his wife Suzanne M. Ward of Melrose.Dear sister of Lillian P. Flynn and her late husband Thomas F. Flynn, II, of Pittsfield.Cherished grandmother of Daniel V. Ward and his wife Christina of South Boston.Loving great-grandmother of Ansell Duffy Ward. Loving aunt of Patricia Torra of Pittsfield, Thomas Flynn III of Pittsfield, Kathy Flynn of Newton, Michael Flynn of Newburyport, Maureen Griffin of Pittsfield, Christopher Flynn of Pittsfield, Mary George of Red Lodge, MT, Joan Salantino of Pittsfield, and Erin Bassi of Pittsfield.Also survived by many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Lucy's life for Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Saturday, June 16 from 2-6 PM.Her Funeral will be held from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Monday, June 18 at 9 AM followed by her Funeral Mass celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose at 10 AM. Interment at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River on Monday at 12 Noon.
