Mrs. M. Penelope (Gale) Smith of Colchester, CT, formerly of Melrose, died Friday morning, January 5, 2007 at the Middlesex Hospital Marlborough Medical Center in Marlborough, CT.
Mrs. Smith was born in Boston, March 8, 1912, daughter of the late Robert Gale and Annie L. (Strum) Gale.
Penelope lived in Melrose for many years. She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was a soloist in the chapel service. For 25 years she enjoyed singing in a group which entertained veterans in the Boston area, the Bedford VA and the Chelsea Soldiers Home. She also sang in several women's clubs on the North Shore for many years.
Penelope was the devoted mother of Rev. Shirley Hoover Pearse and her husband Don of Gilbert, AZ and the late Robert L. Smith. Mother in law of Patricia (Gordinier) Smith of Woburn. Cherished grandmother of Brian Smith, David Smith, Deborah DeRoche, Lucinda Pack, and Ralph Hoover. Also survived by 9 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
