Madeleine M. "Maddy" Goebel, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully in 102nd year on Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Golden Living Center - The Elmhurst.

Madeleine was born in Clinton on April 8, 1914. She was raised by the late Robert H. and Ethel M. (McClintock) Goebel in Berlin, New Hampshire where she graduated from high school in 1931. She received a degree in education from Plymouth Normal School and taught elementary school for 12 years in Hanover and Salem, NH before moving to Melrose in 1947. She then taught for 27 years primarily in fifth grade at Horace Mann Elementary School. While teaching in Melrose, she also did graduate work at Boston University. A proud teacher, she retired in 1974 after nearly 40 years in the profession.

Maddy was a friendly, engaging presence who always had a kind word to share. She was universally liked by everyone she met. She was sincere, trustworthy and equally kind to friends, neighbors, and strangers alike. Maddy enjoyed keeping up with current events, politics, or local knowledge. She preferred letter writing as her means of communication, and would write letters nearly everyday to family and friends.

Maddy was a longtime member of Trinity Church where she was active for many years. She enjoyed knitting especially for the benefit of the Thrift Shop and participating in Church life.Later in life, she kept her mind sharp with scrabble games daily and continuing to write letters with her excellent penmanship. She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff at the Fitch Home for their professional care, and genuine concern for Maddy.

Madeleine was the devoted sister of the late Doris Mager. Loving aunt of Alan Mager and his wife Janice of Gainesville, VA, and Cynthia Kenney of Adkins, TX. Caring great-aunt of Suzanne Salloway and her husband Barry of Hampton, NH, Peter Fillion and his partner Shelly Snodgrass of Freeport, ME, and Linda Kaczynski and her husband John of Marshfield.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor of Madeleine's life at Trinity Church, 131 W. Emerson St., Melrose for her Funeral Service on Monday, March 7 at 9am. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster. Contributions in Madeleine's memory may be made to Trinity Church, 131 W. Emerson St., Melrose MA 02176.
