Malcolm B. Bayliss

Malcolm Briggs Bayliss died peacefully in his sleep at home on January 12 at the age of 93 after a period of declining health. Barbara, his loving wife of 69 years, was at his side.

He was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, to Helen Shipman Bayliss and Donald Bayliss.Raised in El Paso, Texas, he returned east to attend the Hill School, followed by Harvard College and Harvard Law School.Malcolm and Barbara (Karbaum) met when Malcolm was an undergraduate at Harvard and Barbara was working at the circulation desk at Widener Library. They married in 1952 in Cambridge, MA, and then moved to New York City, where they remained for more than 50 years.

Following service in the U.S. Army between 1952 and 1955, Malcolm had a long and productive career in business law, first as a partner at Reid & Priest and then for more than 20 years at AMAX Inc., a metals and natural resources company. At AMAX, he ultimately served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

He relished experiences interacting with other cultures, especially Mexico, South America, Japan, and Botswana. After retirement, he combined passions for corporate problem-solving and international travel volunteering with the International Executive Service Corps (IESC) advising the governments of the Czech Republic, Poland, and Kazakhstan on privatizing the mineral industry following the velvet revolution.

He was thoughtful, witty, and intellectually curious.Malcolm was a life-long learner, reading calculus for "fun" during his working life, and in retirement often tackling giant tomes on politics or history. He loved classical music and opera, subscribing to the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the Norfolk Music Festival, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

He and Barbara bought a second home in Sheffield, MA in 1975.That became a cherished location for family gatherings with friends and neighbors for many decades. He was committed to the local community, supporting The Nature Conservancy and the Sheffield Land Trust.

Notwithstanding his rewarding career, he was happiest in the company of his family, spending time with his daughters, sons-in-law, five grandsons and (finally!) a granddaughter. He and Barbara were devoted to each other. He supported and cared for her following a profound hearing loss, and she cared for him through his final illness, providing immeasurable comfort for him.

Malcolm is survived by his wife, Barbara (Karbaum); three daughters, Elizabeth Bayliss (Simon Hambidge), Martha Bayliss (Edward Gildea) and Sarah Bayliss (Michael Sand); five grand-sons, Timothy Hambidge, Peter Hambidge, Benjamin Porter (fiancee Cameron Griffin), Samuel Porter, and Oliver Sand, and one granddaughter, Charlotte Sand; niece Katharine Wagner; and grandnieces Bayliss Wagner and Alden Wagner. His sister, Virginia Wagner, and nephew, Roger Wagner, predeceased him.

Due to COVID, the family is planning a private burial and a future celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in Malcolm's memory.
