Mrs. Marcia M. (Black) Brophy, a 17-year resident of South Yarmouth, and formerly of North Reading and Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at Cape Cod Hospital, at the age of 78.
Mrs. Brophy was born in Melrose on December 23, 1933, a daughter of the late Stanley H. Black and Florence Elsie (Purdy) Black. She graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1951 where she met and began dating her husband of 56 years, James E. Brophy.One of six married couples from the graduating class of 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Brophy enjoyed a partnership of love and admiration throughout their marriage.They were married in Melrose at St. Mary's Church on September 23, 1956.
They settled in North Reading, where they raised their three children and Marcia devoted herself to caring for their every need.She drove them to sports practices and games, took care of their bumps and bruises with a mother's touch, and celebrated their every occasion with a full house of friends and family.
Marcia and Jim travelled extensively from Las Vegas to California, Florida, the Grand Canyon, Barbados, Ireland and Portugal.They especially enjoyed their yearly trips to the White Mountains with Jim's family.Mrs. Brophy found great pleasure in gardening outdoors, making Nantucket Baskets, cake-decorating, flower-arranging, and above all else loved having family around.A selfless person, Mrs. Brophy always put tending to her family's needs first, never said no and always tried to help wherever she could. She will be remembered for her devotion and loyalty to her family, setting a standard for others to follow.She will be missed.
Mrs. Brophy was the beloved wife of James E. Brophy with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Karen J. Twomey and her husband Jack of Melrose, Robert J. Brophy and his wife Deborah of N. Reading, and John S. Brophy and his wife Korey of Harwich.Dear sister of the late F. Jean Pare.Cherished grandmother of Erin Galvin and her husband Stephen, Sean Twomey and his girlfriend Aleksandra, Kristyn, Matthew, Emily, and step-grandmother of Michele, Shannon, Axell, and Samantha.Loving great-grandmother of Stephen Galvin and Roman Twomey, and step great-grandmother of 7. Also survived by William "Bill" Colcord of Chelmsford, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Marcia's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, September 26 from 4-8 PM and again on Thursday morning at 9:00 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.Gifts in honor of Marcia's life may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701, or a charity of your choice.
