Marjorie Hill-Devine, longtime Melrose resident, died on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital after a long illness.She was 72.

Born on March 2, 1947, Marjorie is one of four children of the late Lewis and Ruth (nee Thomas) Hill.She grew up in Newton and spent her childhood summers in Salem.

After earning a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from Northeastern University and Master of Library Science from Pratt Institute, she served as the Director of the North Reading and Winthrop Public Libraries. She loved her profession and took great care in curating library collections. A lifelong learner, she earned Master of Women's Studies from the University of Southern Connecticut during her retirement.

Marjorie was a dedicated single mother who loved her family and was exceptionally proud of their accomplishments. She also valued the companionship of her partner Glen, with whom she frequently enjoyed spending time at her vacation home in Seabrook, New Hampshire, and maintained a deep affection for her dogs. In her later years, she took pleasure in nurturing friendships and reconnecting with relatives living throughout the country. She faced terminal illness with grace and refused to sugarcoat the reality of her declining health.

Marjorie was predeceased in 1983 by her husband Alfred Devine and is survived by her longtime companion Glen Ebert, son Joseph Devine and his wife Analyn of Wakefield, and son Thomas Devine and his partner Tony Ascenso of Salem. Dear sister of Richard Hill and his wife Dorothy of Medfield; and the late Charlotte Chase husband James of Ipswich; and late Robert Hill.

All are welcome to gather in honor of Marjorie during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, Dec. 26from 4-8pm, and again on Friday for her Funeral Service celebrated at 10am. Interment in Nemasket Hill Cemetery, Middleborough.

Donations in memory of Marjorie may be made to the Melrose Public Library, 69 W. Emerson St., Melrose.
