Markrine Kien

Markrine (Mark) Kien, resident of Medford, passed away on August 20, 2022 at Brigham and Women's Hospital from bronchiectasis, a chronic lung disease he battled since childhood. He ended the fight on his terms and was surrounded by his loving friends and family in peace.

Born on December 23, 1990 in the Bronx, Mark was one of three children of Sovane Kien and the late Thanh (Lam) Kien. He had spent his childhood in Connecticut, grew up in Florida until he turned 20, and then moved to Massachusetts during his adult life.

He attended Poinciana High School in Florida and was currently working on his bachelor's degree in Medical Engineering Technology at UMass Lowell. In addition, he obtained his Fundamentals of Biomanufacturing at WPI in 2016.

Mark was a stubborn person. He loved getting into arguments with people whenever he knew he was right (which was pretty often). Though he put up a front portraying himself as a tough person, in reality he was a loving and gentle soul who always cared deeply for those who cared about him. He enjoyed a good prank, music on all spectrums, comics, technology, spending time with family and friends, and some would say he had a stellar sense of fashion.

Though it took him some time, Mark was able to find a close group of people that wholeheartedly accepted his unique character. He wasn't particularly picky with food (he could subsist on steamed chicken, brown rice, and broccoli his entire life if he wanted to), however he had a strong hatred of soup. One instance of this was when his sister-in-law was pregnant and had a strong craving for soup. In true Mark fashion, he strolled into the kitchen where her soup was just made and danced his armpits over her soup in front of his sister-in-law. She got so mad she yelled at him, but Mark left the room unphased and satisfied with his deed.

Mark will be missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.

Mark is survived by his beloved fiancée Michelle Hu, brother Tola Kien and his wife Chinda of South Carolina, his sister Yanny Ruswinkle and her husband Christian of Arizona, and seven nieces and nephews.
