Martin J. &Quot;Marty&Quot; Lane

Mr. Martin J. "Marty" Lane, a resident of Melrose and formerly of Wakefield and Medford, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 26, 2011.He was 87 years old.

Martin was born on October 2, 1923 in Medford, one of six children of the late Martin J. Lane and Katherine (Fonthergill) Lane.

Martin, "Marty" as he was affectionately known, was raised in Medford where he graduated from Medford High School.At the age of 19, he entered the United States Army and was part of the European Campaign during World War II.Mr. Lane was a prisoner of war and recipient of the Purple Heart as a member of the 101st Airborne Unit.

Marty received his bachelor's degree from Fitchburg State College and taught computer science classes at Arlington High School for many years.

Marty was the beloved husband of Theresa (Bailey) "Terry" Lane with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.Loving father of Kevin J. Lane and his wife Cathleen of The Woodlands, TX, Lisa O'Connell of N. Reading, Robert Lane and his wife Laurie of Reading, Martin J. Lane, Jr. of FL, and Cathy Fish of Greenville, SC.Dear brother of Frances Kearney, Richard Lane, Doris Campbell, Betty O'Connor, and Regina MacLean.Also survived by 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews.

Graveside Service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Conery Rd, Bourne, on Friday, April 29 at 10:45 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St, Melrose on Thursday from 4-8 PM.
