Mary "Lois" (Patterson) Armstrong
Lois was born in Millidgeville, GA on January 15, 1928, one of two daughters of the late Hugh W. and Beulah B. (Parker) Patterson. She was raised in Long Island, NY until the age of 12 when the family moved to Gulf Port, Mississippi. She graduated from Gulf Port High School, and received her Associate's Degree from Gulf Park College in 1948. She met Glenn W. Armstrong on a blind date, and for Glenn it was love at first sight. He knew that he would marry Lois the minute he met her, and they did on December 17, 1949 in Malden. Lois and Glenn settled in Melrose in 1955 to raise a family.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. With five children she was a full time mother, but also worked part time as a bookkeeper at Langley Equipment Co., and later at the First Baptist Church in Melrose.Lois was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years.
In her free time, she enjoyed playing bridge, going to the beach, attending arts and crafts classes, and was a member of the "Lois" only Club. She was a member of the Melrose PTA, Mother's Club, and served as a Den Mother for many years. A naturally friendly and kind woman, Lois loved attending social events at Church, or hosting family and friends at her home. Nearly every day, she enjoyed a good cup of coffee and a graham cracker while reading the newspaper from front to back.
Lois never forgot her childhood roots in Mississippi. For many years, she took great pleasure in returning to Mississippi to see family and could enjoy the hot weather and Cajun food. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the country, visiting nearly every state while on business trips with Glenn.
Lois was a caring, sweet woman who never had a bad word to say about anyone. She always thought the best of people, and would do anything for her neighbors, friends or family. She will be remembered for her sweet disposition, her love of family holidays, and easy smile.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late Glenn W. Armstrong, Jr. Devoted mother of Lawrence V. Armstrong and his wife Judy of Windham, NH, Ronald L. Armstrong and his wife Debra of Northampton NH, Deborah L. Hand and her husband John of Melrose, Janice E. Choiniere and her husband Steven of Derry, NH, and Stephen H. Armstrong and his wife Rita of Melrose. Caring sister of Jean Moulder and her late husband Charles of Hattiesburg, MS. Cherished grandmother of Robyn, Laura, Taylor, Zachary, Brett, Caroline, Lauren, and Sophia. Also survived by her dear friend and supportive companion, Gayle Tisei of Melrose.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Lois during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, August 23 from 4-8pm, and for her Funeral Service at the First Baptist Church, 561 Main St., Melrose on Thursday at 10am. Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
