Mary A. Doherty

June 19, 1939 — March 4, 2022

Mary A. Doherty

Mary A. Doherty, a resident of Melrose and formerly longtime of Somerville, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Glen Ridge Nursing Care in Medford, at age 82.

Mary was born in Charlestown on June 19, 1939, one of three children of the late Catherine (Gorry) and Bernard Doherty. She was raised in Charlestown, graduated from Charlestown High School, and resided in Somerville for most of her life.

Mary retired from the Patent Department of Polaroid after 38 years of service. She was never married, but was the supportive glue that held her family together. Mary selflessly served as caretaker for both her mother and father through illness, and later for her beloved sister, Catherine. She and Catherine were nearly inseparable for many years, enjoying each other's company while going out to lunch, shopping, or simply walking around Davis Square. She and Catherine enjoyed many years of laughter, tears, and happy memories that mutually enriched their lives. She experienced Disney through the eyes of her dearly beloved nieces and nephews, who she treated more like her own children. She was always enthusiastic, quick to smile, and shared her love effortlessly among her family.

Mary was a devout Catholic, constantly prayed to Mother Mary, and attended St. Mary's Church after relocating to Melrose to be closer to family. She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and enjoyed her 75th birthday with her first visit to Fenway Park. Sociable and funny, she was always up for a party, and always the last to leave. She had a great Irish wit, and was always ready to share a story or laugh with her friends and family.

Mary will be deeply missed, but her love, tender care and uplifting spirit will continue as her legacy. May her soul and all the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.

Mary is predeceased by her dear sister, Catherine E. Sellon.

She is survived by her cherished brother, Ret. Officer Bernard J. Doherty of Somerville; nieces and nephews, Thomas Sellon and his wife Angela of NH, Theresa Sellon and her boyfriend Curt Selig of Melrose, Timothy Doherty and his wife Christine of NH, Maureen Doherty and her companion Louie Mauro of Somerville, Barney Doherty and his wife Montana of MT; and special great-nephew Luke Sellon. She is also survived by many other loving nieces, nephews and close cousins.

Relatives & friends are invited to gather in honor of Mary's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, March 9 from 9-10am, followed by her Funeral Service celebrated at 10am. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
