Mrs. Mary "Betty" (Coburn) Rowland of Peabody formerly a long time resident of Melrose died Sunday,
February 9, 2003 in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born January 30, 1921 in Windham, NH. Daughter of the late George and Sarah J.
(Smith) Coburn. She was a resident of Melrose for several years until moving to Salem,
NH. She and her husband Richard returned to Melrose and resided there until moving to
Peabody 1 year ago. She was a graduate of Stevens High School in Claremont, NH Class
of 1939.
She was an Assistant Financial Manager for Scully Signal Company for 20 years
until her retirement.
She was a long time active member of the Melrose Highlands Congregational
Church where she also served as President of the Women's Guild. She was a Past
President of the Windham Woman's Club and was also past president of the former
Highlands Women's Club. She was a member of the Phi Theta Pxi.
Wife of Richard Rowland with whom she shared 59 years of marriage. Mother of
Barbara J. Bemiss and her husband Alan P. of Melrose, Kenneth D. Rowland and his wife
Susan of Lynnfield and Charlotte A. Rowland of Jacksonville, FL. Grandmother of Scott
Bemiss and his wife Kathleen, Brian Bemiss, Philip Bemiss, Courtney Monaco and her husband John,
and Lt. Grant D. Rowland. Great grandmother of William, Madeline and
Sophia Bemiss.
She was the sister of the late Frederick and Alexander "Sandy" Coburn, Dorothy
Parker, Ruth Henderson and William Snow.
