Meron Ananian

Meron Ananian

Lt. Colonel Meron "Pete" Ananian USAF Retired, a man whom everyone knew as
Pete, died peacefully at Melrose Wakefield Hospital February 18, 2003. He lived 82 active years as a golfer, gardner, bridge player, and devoted father and grandfather.He
was a family handyman who could "fix anything except broken hearts," and he hoped there
wouldn't be many of those.
He was born December 4, 1920, in Newburyport, MA, son of the late Alexander
and Eliza (Tarkanian) Ananian. He has been a Melrose resident for 35 years.He
graduated from Newburyport High School, 1937.Governor Dummer Academy and Army
Language School.He began his military career in 1943 when he joined the Army Air
Corps.
In 1944 he was stationed in San Giovanni, Italy, from which he flew 50 missions as
a bombardier on a B-24, the plane that was immortalized by Stephen Ambrose inTHE
WILD BLUE.In later years he reunited with the crew whom he credited for their never
sustaining a casualty, and they remained in close contact for the last years of his life.
After the war, he worked as a silversmith for Towle Manufacturing in
Newburyport.In 1951 he was recalled into the Air Force where he served until 1968.
During his military career, Meron Ananian was awarded the Air Medal, Air Force
Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal,
Presidential Unit Citation, European-American-Middle East Campaign Medal, Air Force
Longevity Service Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Asward, the World War II Victory
Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.Meron Ananian retired from the
Massachusets Department of Public Works in 1991.
Meron Ananian was a proud 60 year member of the Central Congregational Church
in Newburyport.He had a love of country and family and, quoting Lou Gehrig would
frequently refer to himself as "the luckiest man alive." It was, however, the recipients of
his quiet generosity who counted themselves among the lucky.


Husband of Roxie (Dasdagulian) Ananian with whom he shared 56 years of
marriage.Father of Joyce Ananian and her husband, Kevin Currie of Waltham, Jan
Ananian of Reading and Linda Ananian and her husband Craig Vickery of Reading.
Brother of the late Vuskin, Leon, and Kourken Ananian.Grandfather of Ellen Vickery
and Glenn Vickery, both of Reading.


Funeral Service at the Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb St.,
Newburyport,Friday, February 21 at 11 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully
invited.Visiting hoursat the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., MELROSE
