Mrs. Mildred J. "Millie" (Benson) Bennett, a resident of Melrose and formerly of Chelsea, passed away on November 11, 2009 at the Bear Hill Nursing Center in Stoneham after a period of declining health.She was 92 years old.Mrs. Bennett was born on September 20, 1917 in Abington, daughter of the late Joseph Benson and Rose (Cushing) Benson. Mildred or "Millie" as she was affectionately known lived in both Chelsea and Melrose.She worked as a waitress, an eyeglass technician for American Optical and an operator at Chelsea Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Bennett was a vivacious and energetic woman who gave enthusiastically of her talents, gifts and leadership skills. She was a former member of the County Road Church of Chelsea where she was very active in the church's Mother's Club. She was a past president of the Chelsea Women's Club, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, an officer of the Sons and Daughters of Union Veterans and a volunteer for the Salvation Army and Red Cross.
Millie was an avid reader and cross word puzzle wiz who also loved to travel.She visited family and friends in Florida, California, Nevada and Hawaii. She gave her time to her family with her talent for sewing, knitting and cooking fabulous meals. Millie always loved to dance and was still out on the dance floor for her grandchildren's weddings. She loved to laugh and was always up for a good game of cards and being surrounded by her friends and family. Her extraordinary energy will always be remembered and she will be greatly missed.
She was the beloved wife of the late Sidney C. "Sid" Bennett.Devoted mother of Richard W. "Rick" Bennett and his wife Donna of Hampton, NH., Janet R. "Jan" Fee and her late husband Joseph of North Reading, James B. Bennett and his wife Carol of Palm Springs, CA, Melanie L. "Mel" Bennett and her husband David Haroutunian of Newburyport and the late Sidney J. Bennett.Dear sister of Marion Lowery of Gonic, NH and the late Eleanor Donati, Harold Benson and Fred Benson.Cherished grandmother of 14 loving grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside Service at Village Cemetery, 339 Washington St., Weymouth on Friday, November 13 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
