Paul J. Dailey, longtime resident of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 29, 2022. He was 86.
Born on December 31, 1935, Paul was one of eight children of the late Francis and Marian (Cunningham) Dailey. He grew up in South Boston and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953. He attended Poland Springs Caddy Camp from 1947-1952, and outside of his family life, those were some of his fondest memories. He continued to make trips throughout his later years to reminisce and see old friends.
After high school, Paul enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country during the Korean War era. While in the Marines, he earned his Expert badge in both Rifle and Pistol marksmanship. After serving for over 6 years, Paul was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. In the years that followed, Paul went on to play several standout seasons in the Boston Park League for the South Boston Chippewas and Charlestown Townies football teams.
Paul met and later married the love and light of his life, Mary, in May of 1967 at St. Cecilia Church in Boston. They settled in Melrose in 1971 to raise their family. Paul worked at Boston Edison and then as a Mason for numerous years before eventually taking a position at the Department of Education. He made many lifelong friends at each stop along the way. After retirement, he volunteered at the local Bread of Life food pantry. He was also a longtime member of the VFW- Harold O. Young Post.
Paul loved life and treated each day as a gift. His family meant everything to him. Hecherished Mary and adored his sons and was exceptionally proud of both of his grandchildren. He loved to tell a good story and enjoyed being around his family and friends. His quick smile and infectious laugh endeared Paul to all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his family, Paul also treasured the time he spent at Mt. Hood playing golf with Bob Chris and Riley's Raiders and valued the many dear friendships he developed there over the years.
He enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Pats and Bruins, as well as traveling up the coast of Maine and vacationing with his family in Eastham. Paul also treasured the opportunity he and Mary had when they took their long-awaited trip to Ireland together.
Paul's love, warmth, and kindness will be missed, but he will live on through the countless fond memories that were created.
Paul was the beloved husband of Mary T. Dailey with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. Devoted father of Patrick J. (Ginny) Dailey of Everett and Brian R. (Robyn) Dailey of Canton, GA. Proud Papa of Dillon Paul and Reagan Marie Dailey. Loving brother of John C. of Marshfield, Daniel "Leo" of Braintree, the late Francis, Michael, Gerald, and Kevin Dailey, and Mary Ellen Golden.
