Paul R. Dunn

Mr. Paul R. Dunn, a resident of Brooksby Village in Peabody, and a former longtime resident of Malden and Melrose, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at age 91.

Paul R. Dunn was born on April 26, 1922 in Medford, one of two children of the late William J. Dunn and Frances L. (Callanan) Dunn. He was raised in Malden where he graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1940, and from Boston College in 1944. He honorably served his country during WWII in the European Theatre as a member of the US Army. Paul was awarded the Bronze Star for "his bravery, calmness under fire, and zealous devotion to duty" during the Battle of Bulge, where he returned to the front to evacuate the many wounded.

Following his discharge from the Army, Paul began a 40-year banking career in Boston. Mr. Dunn worked for National Credit Office in Leasing Operations for 22 years. With a strong work ethic, he worked his way up within the company and was hired by Bank of Boston in 1967. After over 20 years at Bank of Boston, he retired as a Vice President at age 69.
Paul R. Dunn was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Malden where he served on the Parish Council for several years. He was a member of the Christian Family Movement for several years, and involved with the Jesuit Center's Interracial Group. A proud Boston College graduate, Paul returned to his alma mater for monthly Sodality meetings. He also served as Chairman of the Board for Nazareth Academy in Wakefield.

Following his retirement, Paul and Alice enjoyed traveling together to see their children and grandchildren. They visited with family and friends in Hawaii, Alaska, Egypt, Turkey, Italy, and throughout the US and Europe. Every summer for much of his life, he enjoyed time with family at their cottage on Squam Lake in Holderness, NH. In later years, he loved to walk, play cribbage, and eat ice cream. A great listener, Mr. Dunn was humble and self-effacing, but at the right moment, showed his quick wit and keen sense of humor.

Above all else, Paul was deeply devoted to his family and forever proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Paul R. Dunn was the beloved husband of the late Alice M. (Daly) Dunn with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Devoted father of Marie Dunn Ricciardone and her husband Francis J. of Turkey, Paula J. Dunn and her late husband John E. Smith, J. Edward Dunn and his wife Sue of Plymouth, William R. Dunn of Kenai, AK, and Alice D. Smith and her husband Gary M. of Melrose. Dear brother of the late Dorothy Flanagan. Cherished grandfather of Francesca, Chiara, Jamie, Phillip, Jennifer, Kristin, Kathleen, Chris, Tom, Michael, Brian, Marlena, and Patrick. Loving great-grandfather of Aldo, Jackson, Gabrielle, Kyle, Frankie, William, Bridget, Olivia, Guinevere, Jacqueline, Jason, Kara, Steven, Alexis, Rylan, Drew, and Evan. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
