Philip R. Derrick, longtime Malden resident, passed away after a stoic battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, with is family by his side, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 69.
Born in Beverly, MA, on May 30, 1955, one of four children of the late Milton and Elenore (Hayes) Derrick. He grew up in Cambridge, Texas, and Watertown, where he graduated from Watertown High School in 1973. He married his beloved Mary Gibbons, and first moved to Everett before settling in Malden to raise their family.
Philip's dedication to his craft as a backhoe operator at Commonwealth Gas, later Eversource, and his membership in the United Steel Workers Local 12004 exemplified his work ethic and unwavering commitment.
Known for his quiet demeanor and easygoing nature, Philip had a deep passion for music, art, and military history, often immersing himself in books and paintings. His affinity for travel and fondness for Texas and Maine, particularly Wells, brought him solace and joy throughout his life.
A loving pet owner to his dogs Oliver and Flossy, Philip's gentle spirit touched the lives of those around him. Despite facing the challenges of cancer with unwavering strength and resilience, Philip found comfort in treasured memories and the love of his family.
Philip will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by those blessed to know and love him.
Philip was the beloved husband of Mary V. (Gibbons) Derrick with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. Devoted father of Philip Derrick Jr., of Santa Fe, NM and Brian Derrick and his partner Martin Burke of Everett. Dear brother of Charles D. Derrick and his wife Frances of NC, Steven D. Derrick and his partner Kathy Browne of E. Walpole, and the late Carol Stiegel.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather in honor of Philip’s life during visiting hours at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St, Melrose, on Monday, Oct. 7 from 4-7pm, and again on Tuesday for his Funeral Service celebrated at 10am. Private interment at Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Philip may be made to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Office of Philanthropy, 529 Main St., 4th Floor, Charlestown, MA. 02129, and designate gift for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program.
