Mrs. Phyllis A. Emerson, of Melrose, passed away on Wednesday morning April 9, 2008 at the Golden Living Center Dexter House in Malden.She was 86 years old.

Phyllis was born on May 12, 1921 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, a daughter of the late Roland Dent and Doris (Robinson) Dent.The family settled in Market Rasen, England until Phyllis reached the age of 5.At that time, her family moved permanently to Croyden Flat, NH.

After graduating from Towle High School in Newport, NH in 1939, Phyllis moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music.While living in Boston, she worked several jobs including Raytheon Co. during the war effort, Kennedy's department stores and also as a piano teacher.In 1956, she met her husband, Frederick E. Emerson, during a blind date and became a loving wife and mother. She and Fred raised two daughters and resided in Melrose on Linden Road from 1958 until 2001.

Phyllis attended and was a 60-year member of the Tremont Temple Baptist Church in Boston.She learned piano at an early age, practicing for 3 hours daily through her childhood and into adult life.The classics as well as church hymns were her favorites.She was a member of the church choir at Tremont Temple Church, as well as served on the Women's Missionary Union.For many years, she sang in the Polymnia Choral Society in Melrose and played piano for her Sunday School group.

She was an avid gardener and was often seen tending to her flower and vegetable gardens.Her piano playing and singing were often heard by family and her neighbors in Melrose.Her family, the church, piano playing, singing, and gardening were the loves of her life.

Phyllis was the beloved wife of the late Frederick E. Emerson.Devoted mother of Marie A. Cusato and her husband, Steven of Saugus and Evelyn E. Sweeney and her husband, Kevin of Dalton, NH.Dear sister of Norman Dent and his wife, Marion of Bassett, VA and the late Clifford Dent.Cherished grandmother of Rebecca L. Sweeney of Dalton, NH.Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
