Mrs. Phyllis (Hedin) Smith, a long time Melrose resident, passed away on Saturday morning, April 11, 2009 in the Wingate at Reading Nursing Home in Reading following a period of declining health. She was 99 years old.

Mrs. Smith was born in Augusta, Maine on July 9, 1909, one of two daughters to the late Carl J. Hedin and Julia (Lowell) Hedin.

Mrs. Smith was raised in Bangor, Maine and graduated from Bangor High School and Wheaton College in 1931. She served on the Board at the Fitch Home in Melrose and the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.She was a member and past president of Phi Theta Xi in Melrose and a member of Circle 19 at the First Congregational Church.

Phyllis was the beloved wife of the late J. Philip Smith with whom she shared 54 years of marriage. Loving mother of Carl H. Smith and his wife Ruth of Denver, CO and Sarah-Jane Swain and her husband Ronald of Reading.Dear sister of the late Dr. Constance Carlson. Cherished grandmother of Anne M. Smith of Pembroke, NH; A. Philip Smith of Denver, CO;Christina L. Swain of Newburyport and Ronald W. Swain of Wakefield. Cherished great grandmother of Lilah B. Swain of Newburyport and Peter E. Swain of Wakefield. Dear aunt of Julia Carlson Kilroy of Galway, Ireland.

A Funeral Service celebrating Phyllis's life will be held in the First Congregational Church, 121 West Foster St., Melrose Thursday, April 16 at 11 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
